SAM GRIBLEY DAY A Student Led, Text Driven Field Trip Developed by Rachel Matile, Chase County Elementary, Strong City, Kansas "Since 2015, Rachel Matile has led her 5th Graders at Chase County Elementary School in Strong City, Kansas on an adventure based on the books My Side of the Mountain and The Pocket Guide to the Outdoors. The program culminates in “Sam Gribley Day,” a day of activities including how to build a fire, catch a fish, make a fishhook, identify plants, build a shelter, and make solar ovens and clay pots. The students form groups and spend the day trying their skills at a series of activities based on what Sam Gribley did in My Side of the Mountain. I am amazed every year at what the kids accomplish during the day and at home on their own!" - Twig George "For awhile I felt like Sam. He really inspired me to be wild." Beyond the Science Kit: Inquiry in Action
The goal of Wendy Saul and Jeanne Reardon's book is not to dispense with kits, rather to encourage teachers and their students to see kits as just a beginning to real scientific inquiry. The essays in this volume reveal how elementary teachers have turned around their teaching to make themselves and their students producers as well as consumers of science knowledge. Section 12, by Twig C. George, is a detailed description of how teacher’s used Jean’s George’s Ecological Mysteries (The Missing Gator of Gumbo Limbo, Who Really Killed Cock Robin, and The Case of the Missing Cutthroat) to help children write their owns stories. |
