Twig's 'Seahorses' coverSeahorses: George spins a memorable selection of basic facts about seahorses on a playful current of prose: "If you were a seahorse, you could roll your eyes in two different directions, and not get dizzy. You could see where you were going and where you had come from, all at the same time. Quite a gift." Big, sharp close-ups depict several species (identified with both common and scientific names), each more delectably weird-looking than the last, in natural settings. The author closes this beguiling introduction with additional seahorse lore, plus a lead to more information. A rare encounter with the natural world, equally suited to private research or reading aloud.      (November 15, 2003 issue of Kirkus)

Twig George grew up surrounded by wildlife. By the time she  graduated from high school, her family had raised and released 1?3 wild animals, not  counting their dogs and cats. She often went to sleep with raccoons curled up in her bed,  and awoke to crows knocking on the window to come in for breakfast.

These early experiences led to her continued love of the natural  world. As an adult, she became interested in conservation education and worked for the  Center for Marine Conservation in Washington, D.C. Her husband, David Pittenger, is  director of the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland.

Long-snouted seahorseThe Aquarium has been a major part of Twig's family life. It was the first  outing for both her daughters, two days after they were born. Since then the girls have  spent thousands of hours entranced by the inhabitants of the natural-like exhibits.

Twig's first two books, A DOLPHIN NAMED BOB and SWIMMING WITH  SHARKS, were inspired by the Aquarium's largest and, to some people, most captivating  species. In JELLIES, she explored the less-known and less-appreciated animals that  nonetheless need our understanding.

Twig, David, Rebecca, and Caity live in Cockeysville, Maryland.
